PowerVR Technologies Releases First Driver for Linux
Beta 1 Driver Kit Supports STMicroelectronics KYRO Family

PowerVR Technologies – a division of Imagination Technologies – announces the release of a Beta Linux driver for STMicroelectronics’ KYRO family of graphics processors. The drivers are available now for download.

The Imagination Technologies Linux Beta 1 driver kit provides 2D and 3D acceleration for the PowerVR KYRO family of graphics chips running in 16 and 32 bpp depths. The drivers are based on the standard DRI mechanism shipped with XFree86 > 4.0 and support the Red Hat, SuSE and Mandrake Linux distributions.

Says John Metcalfe, VP business development, PowerVR Technologies: “Millions of users world wide use Linux for a wide variety of applications and we are delighted to provide this first driver enabling KYRO use under Linux as part of our ongoing commitment to supporting a broad OS base in the PC market.”

Linux runs on 32-bit architecture, uses pre-emptive multitasking, protected memory, supports multiple users, and has rich support for networking, including TCP/IP networking. Linux runs on a wide variety of hardware, including the full x86 family of processors.

Support for other distributions of Linux is planned for future releases.
