The attractive HP L1955 LCD monitor looks like many other 19-inch models on the market, but it goes beyond the basics with a variety of appealing extra features. Along with the 1,280-by-1,024 panel's performance, that makes it our new Editors' Choice in this class.

The L1955's stand has the typical tilt and swivel adjustments, but also has a helpful height setting and can rotate to portrait mode. HP bundles Portrait Display's Pivot Pro rotation utility software. The thin bezel is attractive, and the five buttons on the front panel have easy-to-see icons. The on-screen menu system is one of the best that we've encountered, and you also get fast access to signal-source selection and the autosync function.

You need the signal-selection feature to choose which of the two inputs you'd like to use; you can connect it to two separate computers. One input is a standard analog VGA-style connector, but the other is a DVI-I connector that accepts either an analog or a digital signal. In this era of cut corners and minimal configurations, it's a pleasant surprise that HP includes a VGA cable and two DVI cables (one for digital and one for analog) in the box. The monitor also has an upstream USB port that drives four downstream USB ports; two are located on the back of the panel, and the other two are on the side of the panel for convenient ad hoc connections.

We tested the monitor with images from DisplayMate (www.displaymate.com), and the results were well above average. The autosync feature worked perfectly, viewing angles were excellent, and color ramps were smooth. We saw no apparent pixel defects, and uniformity looked good. It had only a few weak spots. Dark-gray response was excellent with both digital and analog signals, but light-gray response was better with a digital signal than with analog. And analog signals showed very faint ghosting on some high-contrast images. These are small flaws compared with the high quality of the other results. The panel is rated at 16-ms pixel response speed, so we saw noticeable smearing on moving images, as would be expected from a panel with this rating.

Still, if you want a no-apologies LCD monitor with plenty of features, and are willing to spend a bit more than the bargain-basement 19-inch models cost, the HP L1955 is a strong performer at an attractive price.
