However, the golden rule is still in conflict here. You are right on the value is based on each of his own, but you're missing out that the action is not! Golden rule is not just about self value, but also the way to treat others from this value. If the giver and the receiver does not share the same value, how do you justify as no conflict at all? Since non of the forum member here is that Harvard girl, logically non of us can implement their golden rule to her toward her child and use it as an argument. I still don't see the conflict since I'm not sure what you meant by action is not. If one doesn't act based on his own values, it still doesn't change what he believes; it only means he's not strong on principles. People do things they believe to be immoral all the time, they still do it because of the rewards, or because the situation forces them to do so.
True none of us is the students in question, but experiences from socializing and interaction with human in general tell us that few people want their loved ones to do work like prostitution, drug dealer, selling firearms, etc. I said few but I have not seen one.
What do the undergrads believe? Nobody knows for sure, but I think it's a pretty good bet that they would not want their loved ones doing what they do. If they are completely fine with their daughters putting themselves through college selling sex, then they probably really believe there's nothing wrong, and yes, it's nobody's business to interfere....then again, I have not seen a person like this, not without some sort of psychological damage from childhood abuse or whatnot.
Europeans are more liberal than Americans but I still wonder if your professor would still be at ease with her daughter also being a sex worker.
