L1 很早就獨立了
L2 , 也是
但是 Intel 的 core 上面, L2 是共享的, 主要是當低負載的時候, 其中一個核心可以完全關閉, 並由運作中的核心獨享全部的 L2, AMD K8架構上面, 關閉的那顆核心的 L2 會當成 L3 來用
印象中, 因為成本問題, 早期 L2 是在主機板上的, CPU 只內含 L1, 後來Intel搞出個 Slot 1 架構把 L2 從主機板移到那個卡夾上, 一直到 coppermine 才把L2 完全納入晶片裡, 但是, AMD 再那時把 L2 納入CPU(SlotA? 還是 socket 7? 那時忙著補習完全沒啥記憶), 卻仍然相容含有L2 的主機板, 在這情況下, 主機板上的就變成 L3.
到了近代, 在 K8 初期, P4 節節敗退, Intel 從 Xeon 找來 Galatin 重新封裝成S478, 推出 P4 Emergency Edition 應急, 這顆U 的特點就是... 除了 512K 的 L2, 還多了 2M L3...
