depends on the notebook design. some notebook have over-charge protection and some don't.

Dell notebook usually have overcharge protection. when the battery is full, the notebook will stop charging, and the battery become idle mode.

my Sony notebooks (sr7 and GR300) will keep charging all the time. the battery usually die after one year. (hold less than 50% of the charge)
