ASUS A7A266E - ALiMAGiK1 success with AXP2400+

No problems at all for ASUS A7A266E. This processor works well. This is definitely a good news for those who wishes to upgrade their CPU but not their board as yet. BIOS 1012beta002

TO 生魚片兄:
聽說蛌400元
TO att兄:
關於XP2200+
送上一篇曾在艾葳論譠出現但現在找不到的文章,不過太長了所以我分幾段貼出
來,希望有英文強的人能造福xp333的使用者

/* 1st */

this is my moment of glory. i have successfully installed my athlon xp2200+ on the xp333-r. ver 2.1
----you will need another socket A procesor to do this. (i used a Duron 1100)

for those who need to do it, here is how:

1. connect the VSS and NC pins on the back of the xp2200+ processor, see my other post. bottom of this page: http://www.vr-zone.com/Home/news152/news152.htm) shows the pins. NOTE THE ORIENTATION OF THE CPU BEFORE SHORTING PINS!!
2. put the other socket A processor in the mobo and load into the BIOS. make sure your jp31 is set to the right fsb that supports the processor that you're loading with, mine was 100mhz (short pins 1+2)
3. in the Bios, go to iwill smart setting. and set the clock frequency to whatever the processor (THE CPU THAT IS INSTALLED IN THE MOBO!) fsb is rated for. eg. i set mine to 100mhz
4. set the cpu clock ratio to something that is safely supported by the processor installed. eg, mine was 11x since a duron is 1100mhz rating (100mhz fsb x 11x = 1100mhz)
5. everything else should be auto.

save the bios and reload, then turn off comp.

6. put your unlocked 2200+ in and make sure you change the jp31 to support its fsb. (i had to change it from 100mhz to 133mhz since duron is 100 and xp2200+ is 133)
7. boot up into the bios and go into the smartsetting again.
8. change your multiplier to 13x to be safe, or to 14x if you want to overclock it 60mhz, make sure you have sufficient cooling) the real multiplier is 13.5, but it aint there, oh well.
9. change your cpu clock frequency to what your cpu is, i had to change mine to 133mhz from 100mhz, again, xp2200 fsb vs Duron fsb)
10. save, reboot.

Thats it!
happy unlocking!

Leon

/* 2nd */
just updated the bios to april 11th 2002. no problems, other than having to configure the fsb and multiplier in the smartsetting
with the multipler set to 13x and fsb@133mhz, the bios id's the cpu as a 2000+. cause thats what a 2000+ is, 133*13=1729mhz. guess you can squeeze another 66.5mhz out of it through fsb increase or core voltage.
when multiplier is set to 14x, the bios drops it back down to 660mhz, perhaps it's a protection thing in the processor or something.

...time to play with the vcore and the fsb. and if the onboard cpu temp monitors are correct, i can afford to, since the cpu is at 34 deg. Cel. (thermaltake 6cu+, lapped, w/Arctic Silver 3)

anyone know if the "cpu core temp" monitor on the board are is fact correct? anyone checked it against an external core temp monitor?

thanks.
Leon.

第二段

/* 3th */
seems like the speed at (1.65v vcore, and 133mhz bus) tops out at 1666mhz. which is about 12.5x (actually 12.526x)...probably cause the core is at 1.66v realistic, not the nominal 1.65v.
although disappointed, i'm not surprised. it posts the cpu as an xp2000+ which should run at 1729mhz (133*13), but it runs at 1666mhz cause shorting the VSS and NC pins (like connecting the 5th L3 bridge) only unlocks 12.5x (and below) multipliers on the cpu, but nothing above that, so i guess the 13x setting in the bios is redundant, since you'll never set the multiplier higher than 12.5x using this unlocking method because of the processor itself.

at least i got some result though, (starting out with a blank screen when i first got the cpu and board together). i guess that's at least a good amount of progress, which led to the understanding (for me) of how a lot of this stuff works, and although it was a pain in the ass, it was well worth the knowledge gained. now we wait for iWill to get off its ass and release a good bios with autodetect 13.5x multipliers and above, in 0.5x increments.

so i guess now only choice is fsb changing and vcore changing. which still all depend on the the accuracy of the cpu temp monitors which i still would like confirmed if possible.

thanks.

hope you guys learned something from this. i know i learned much more than i wanted to when i decided to make this cpu work on the board.

Leon.

/* 4rd */
Update:
i haver removed my jp31 and upped the fsb to 166, pci divider is auto, and stepped the multiplier down to 11x.

so now i'm running on 166x11 = 1826mhz. and the cpu temp is constant at 43 degrees. (Thermaltake 6cu+ heatsink w/fan. lapped heatsink, arctic silver 3)

the plus side to this is that now my pc2700 (333mhz) ram is actually running at 333mhz without any jumper changes for ram voltage. SWEET!. computer is stable as hell too, at 43 deg., obviously. so cpu is slightly overclocked and the ram is running at optimal speed.

further overclocking efforts will be explored later.

btw. in winXP, i dicovered that CPUCool works best as far as a hardware monitor for XP333-R hardware sensors. use it!

will keep you guys updated.
Leon

/* 5th */
...also, i noticed that the processor is now atually recognized by the bios as a 2200+, pretty cool. WCPUID 3.1 verifies that, including all speeds. i guess the bios just looks at the actual final frequency for id of posted cpu, rather than a lookup table for the fsb/multiplier combination, as i previously thought.
one strange thing. neither WCPUID nor CPU-Z recognize the mobo, they cant run the ID function or something. why? anyone know?...very strange.

some pics:
initial setup: xp2200+ @ 1,666mhz (recognized as 2000+), pc2700 (333mhz)ram @ 266mhz
jp31 at 133mhz, fsb in bios at 133, multiplier @ 13x 42 deg. core temp
http://www.cloud-9.net/Leeoniya/2200+.jpg

current setup: xp2200+ @ 1,826mhz (recognized as 2200+ now), pc2700 (333mhz)ram now @ 333mhz.
jp31 removed, fsb in bios at 166, multiplier @11x 43 deg. core temp
http://www.cloud-9.net/Leeoniya/2200+2.jpg

pci dividers and voltage are both "auto" in bios.

heatsink lapping:
before:
http://www.cloud-9.net/Leeoniya/unlapped.png

after: (1000 grit + water)
http://www.cloud-9.net/Leeoniya/lapped.png

never did use that copper shim...would have degraded heat transfer from core to heatsink, as opening in heatsink is smaller than copper slug, would have made poor contact w/core.
