Melanie Fiona 雙親是蓋亞納移民，有著非洲、印度以及葡萄牙的血統，她從小在多倫多長大，接受雙親的音樂薰陶長大，16歲時就開始寫歌，在2002年她短暫加入了一個在加拿大小有名氣的女子團體（X-Quisite），2005年時跑到洛杉磯去，希望可以得到唱片合約，期間幫人寫歌（Rihanna），以 Syren Hall 的藝名出了首雷鬼的歌曲（收錄於 2008雷鬼金選）。2008年她受邀為 Kanye West 在歐洲巡迴演唱擔任開場，即使當時她並未推出任何一張專輯，但已經受到很多人的重視。直到 2009年中旬，Melanie Fiona 才發行她個人的第一張專輯 The Bridge，2012 年即將推出的專輯為 The MF Life (MF = initials of her name)。
不像其他黑人歌手拼命吊高音賣弄嗓子，Melanie Fiona 是少見清澈又有點沙啞的清爽聲音，不嘈雜也不單薄。
